Dear site owner,
I have been searching for a Mark Crutcher for some time now born in 1868, lymington. He married a Elizabeth Ayres in 1932 Isle of wight, they had 7 children: Isaac, Mark, Walter, Albert, James, Annabella and Henry. There is no father stated for Mark on his marriage certificate. I have found a Mark Light in the 1871 census but then in 1881 the mother is named as Head as houshold as Annie Croucher, you have this information census on one of your pages also in 1881 it states Martha i think its meant to say Mark as it has son next to it. Do you think this is the family i need to search ?

I am looking for further information and advice on how I could trace the parents/family of my great grandmother Phoebe Davis, who was a flower hawker/gypsy.
Phoebe was born on the 31st March 1872, but it is unknown where, she had stated to the Wandsworth workhouse when she arrived there on the 7th April 1899 that her parents were gypsies and had lived in caravans, never having a fixed home that she can remember.
In 1893 Phoebe had given birth to child (male) on Hastings Heath (?) which sadly died at the age of three weeks. It was after this she ran away from home to be with her eldest sister. On the 6th May 1899 Phoebe gave birth to her son John Hughes Davis at the workhouse in Wandsworth. On her sons birth certificate Phoebe stated that she was a flower hawker and gave her address as 11, Point Pleasant, Wandsworth, London, a lodging house. Phoebe left the Wandsworth workhouse on the 20th May 1899, leaving her newly born son behind, and I have not been able to trace any further information about her or find her on any census returns. Any help/imformation would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Tracey
Tracey it may be a coincidence but on the 1901 essexthere is a john davis 23 and phoebe 27 and a son john age 1 and they are hawkers ,there are 2 other adults Davis both 25 but no details ?RG13; Piece: 1563; Folio: 126; Page: 30.
To Site Owner, i did send you another email, I have manged to find a christening for Isaac and Annabellas daughter, Louisa Light. But nothing for any of the other children. I have had searched in Lymington for Isaac and Annabellas son, Mark Crutcher/Crouchers birth but they were unable to find it, So still no birth certificate as of yet.
I am trying to find out about a William Perry any information you can possibly find me ,all i know is he married a mary smith what year i don't know but he settled somewhere around beeford ,beverley yorkshire on one census it told me he was born in bagley leicester which i was told ragley and on another it says nottingham all i know was he used to travel with the moors and the wests and was some relation to the tipton slasher but what that connection is i dont know. please send me any information you can about him i also know he was born sometime about 1803 - 1811
Vicky William Perry was the Tipton Slasher and from web sites that i have seen .quite a few folk reckon rto have seen him as ghost!!
if you want details of web site let me know but if you google Tipton Slasher he should come up there is a great statue of him in boxing prose as well bokt Sue. ps thsi chap has a bare knuckle site(Hello there, as a collector of boxing material, I have a large number of rare images and details of fights and fighters from the period prior to 1910. The Tipton Slasher is mentioned, or featured, in quite a few articles and papers. I'm gradually uploading many of the images at www.famous-fights.com, although I haven't yet uploaded any on William Perry just yet.
If you'd like any details, or for me to check facts for you, just email me and I'll see what I can come up with.
Nick Mc - firstname.lastname@example.org
I must add my thanks to the other comments for such a useful site.
Could I use this platform to ask if anyone has any musicians in their family? I'm interested in anyone born anywhere in England in 1885 or earlier (so, active before 1900). This information is for an upcoming book to be published by the RTFHS. Any details will, of course, be acknowledged in the published volume.
Good ancestor hunting to all.
im not convinced that he was the tipton slasher .i think maybe a cousin as my william perry died in beeford yorkshire in 1871 and was a tinner and brazier i think possibly a cousin of his because my william perry married a mary ann smith and seemed to have all their children around beeford yorks there was 7 of them that i know of?
Vicky do you have a date of birth? as there are quite a few Wiliam Perrys! and did your William come from yorkshire?as any other info would help narrow it down like any kids or brothers and sisters etc.bokt sue.

My great grandmother's maiden name was Patience Thisa Hilden (although Yealden on her marriage certificate to my great grandfather John Twyman in 1913).
In later life she was known as Thirsa Twyman, and after being widowed she remarried and died as Thrisa Olsen.
I have details of her later life, but nothing concrete of her parents and siblings. I cant find out where she was born, exactly when (although I have worked it out to be around 1894.
She died in Thanet in 1961 and I have located her grave. I have searched the census and some BMD records for her or her family - but to no luck yet.
There do seem to be Hildens in the travelling community, but I havent been able to link them with my Patience Thrisa Hilden, even though my family all agree she was from gypsy origin. I would be grateful for any info should anybody know of her or her family. Incidently on the marriage certificate it states her father to be Amos Hilden (and on occasions yealden) I have photographs of her if anybody would like to see.
Also recently some newspaper clippings of Hilden Men (gypsies) between 1910 -1930 I think. The names in the newspaper clipping are William Hilden and Harry HIlden. A family member tells me these are relations - but nobody knows exactly where they all fit togeher & and I would like to
have a bit more evidence and not rely on hearsay. So please - any help is gratefully received should anybody know of my Hildens.

Dear Site owner, Fantastic website!!
I have now been tracing my partner James' family for over 6 months on and off. He is a Buckland and his father got me interested
when he used to tell me that they had of Romany roots. Well what a fascinating time I have had tracing them. James is the great
great grandson of Emmanuel (Mantis) Buckland who married Susannah Coldicott. Susannah's father was William Coldicott
whose second wife (who became Susannah's step mother!) was Vashti Smith, daughter of Moses and Lucretia Smith. I am still
trying to find out whether William Coldicott was of traveller descent. Some records say he was but I am not sure?
Emmanuels father was also called Emmanuel (Mantis) Buckland who married his first cousin Sinfai Bukland, who was the daughter
of 'Ravishing' Billy Buckland, who I really would like to find more about. Following up from Emmanuel, his parents were John Buckland
& Sarah Heron and John's parents were William Buckland & Amey Hearn. This is as far as I have got, but believe me the amount
of ancestors connected with these Bucklands is amazing.
We met up with Jim Hayward and got some of his books, one being about James' great great great grandad himself. Jim was
most helpfull and we plan to go and see him again soon with our updated findings.
I would love to maybe find out more about these Buckland men and women. Hopefully contacting you and by other web visitors
reading this, I maybe able to find out more.Keep up the great work!!
Thankyou Anna for your lovely comments ,well thats a good Romany family and one that is quite well documented as you say and no doubt the Bucklands book were a big help one thing I would like to ask as their are several Mantis Emanuel Bucklands ,have you one that was wed to Aquilla .
