Hi Sorry i do not know your last name.Is this the Harriet Wells (Hooper) who married my great grandfather Henry Wells. If it is the one ,would like to
get in touch.Regards Jenny.
John Gains or Gaines (c1815 (Kent or Sussex) - 1870 (Westwell Union Workhouse Ashford Kent). I have found him in 1851
and 1861 census. In 1851 he was living with Elizabeth Gambrill ( Gambrills well-known gypsy family of Kent) and 3 children.
In 1861 he was living with Elizabeth Newman in Rhodes Minnis - near Folkestone in Kent. I would like to find out where and
when he was born and who his parents were. The only time he gives his place of birth in the census it is "Medhurst Sussex".
I have searched Midhurst and Madehurst Parish Registers in Sussex and found nothing. He was a tinman, woodman, His
grandson spoke Romany. Website is great - loads of info.

I have been tracing my roots and have gone as far as I can, back to Sarah Lee, born in Caynham in Shropshire, 1827. She was a gypsy I believe, and appears as the "mother-in law" of my grandfather in the 1901 census, living with the Hodges (including her daughter Jane), in the parish of Cleobury Mortimer, Shropshire aged 74. I cannot find any previous references to her, or anyother records. I would be most grateful for any further information.

Hercules Stanley "King...
Hercules Stanley "King of the Gypsies". I research the local history of Martin in Hampshire (formerly in Wiltshire until 1895) and have found a written record describing a spectacular monument that stood in the churchyard to the mid 1800's when it was laid flat by the kick of a horse that roamed into the churchyard! The monument has long since vanished. I would welcome any information that would prove this story to be true. Thank you.
In reply to Nicola hanneys post - i have more info and a picture of alice innes and her husband George houghton and can put you in touch with other houghtons from this line. Can she contact me for more info?
Dear Sarah mcqueen,

Hi, i have traced my gypsy genes back to jasper smith 1749 also known as king of the fiddlers. After recently reading both of terence lee's books i was struck by the comment made by lee, that he has a hypothesis that jasper is a brother or brother inlaw to a constance smith who he believes is grandmother to the infamous jasper petrulengro ( ambrose smith ), i was wondering if anyone out there has come across this line in their research. It would be great to get confirmation of this connection or info to put me on the right track to discover it for myself. Email me at email@example.com.
Thank god for this wonderful site!
WHAT A FANTASTIC SITE. I HAVE BEEN TRACING MY FAMILY TREE FOR A WHILE BUT HAVE GOT STUCK ON MY MOTHERS SIDE OF THE FAMILY. SINCE MY MOTHER DIED I HAVE FOUND AN ASSORTMENT OF CERTIFICATES BUT MY GRANDMOTHERS MAIDEN NAME IS A MYSTERY

THE ONLY INFO I HAVE IS THAT MY GRANDMOTHER ONCE LIVED AS A CHILD IN A CARAVAN ON FANNY ON THE HILL IN WELLING KENT THERE IS ALSO A CONNECTION WITH FRUIT AND VEG SHOPS IN THE WELLING AREA (SMITHS) ANY ONE WITH ANY INFO WOULD BE APPRECIATED
Hello there, i am most grateful for all the help i have had so far from this site but the other side of the family is still frustrating me and i was wondering if any of these names sound familiar to anyone.
My grandmother was callled Priscilla cole, born 1916, southampton area.
Amazingly her birth was registered and according to the certificate her parents were William cole and Phyllis Cooper(i beleive the name to be something other than this , i think she may have been known as this).
Her siblings names were Celia, Brittannia,Sammy Bobby, Faney, Harry, Mary, and Billy and of course Priscilla giving a total of 9 children.
Do any of these Cole children sound familiar to anyone please? REBECCA

Hi does anyone out there know of the Eliotts my grt grandad was Solomon Elliott if you have any information l would really appreciate it
Hi - we believe my husband is a direct descendant of Jasper Smith and Catherine(Kitty) Beetles and we have extensive records taken from census,IGI and other sites. We can personally verify back to his gt gt grandmother Reservoy Smith b c 1820 who lived to be 102. Then to her mother Ann ( we believe her maiden name was Biles) lived to be 109 and is buried in Astwood cemetary, Worcester. We think that Ann was the wife of John(Shadrack) Smith b 1803 to Wisdom Smith and Elizabeth Gentle. Reservoy married a Thomas Fletcher who was recorded on the children's birth certs as a Tinman/Brazier. The last child recorded is Wisdom Fletcher b 1867 in Rugby
My husband's Gt Grandmother Damaris (Rose) Fletcher b 1861, was married to Henry Hull but they were known as Strickland for the purposes of their business which was as travelling showpeople. They owned a traction engine called "the Pride of Worcester" which ran galloopers and light shows throughout the Midlands from 1860's through to approx. 1930.
I cannot track Thomas Fletcher anwhere in the census records and I only see Reservoy in the 1891 and 1901 census when she was undoubtedly a widow.I would welcome any help/comments - preferable to "email@example.com" to help me research further. Thanks - this site looks fantastic but in my old age my computer skills are quite limited.
